They Don’t Really Care About Us

Power is the Republican Party’s crack, heroin, and opioid cocktail. Republican politicians will say and do anything to obtain and maintain power. They will even let you die. There is no clearer example of that than how they’ve lied about and managed the COVID-19 pandemic. We are where we are today because Republicans don’t care if you and your loved ones live or die.

The Republican Party’s response to the COVID-19 crisis is the most recent case in a series of crises where they have exhibited their total disdain for the lives of all Americans. Their support for unrestrained firearm ownership has led to an approximate average of 30,000 deaths in the last decade and, in one instance, the heart-crushing deaths of 20 precious babies from Sandy Hook Elementary.  They stood by and watched the heroes of 9/11 (first responders) waste away as they withheld funds to treat those heroes for the debilitating illnesses they incurred in the line of duty. Want more depraved indifference? How about trying to deny approximately 27.5 million Americans health care and then taking away healthcare from an additional 31 million Americans who signed up for Obamacare?

If the above didn’t convince you that the Republican Party is the death party, consider that in the face of a global pandemic, they lied to Americans about the very existence of the virus and continue to lie about the threat it poses. They continue to push an avalanche of lies and nonsensical disinformation to raise doubts and confusion among American citizens and energize their cultish base. The Republican Party’s propaganda arm consisting of Fox, OAN, and Newsmax engaged in a fierce battle to see who could contaminate the airwaves with the most bullshit that undermined science and health professionals.

The results are pretty damn clear; the Republican Party and Donald Trump have been responsible for the lion’s share of 618,000 COVID-19 related deaths. They compounded the deadly cost of their lies by their sheer incompetence and unharnessed greed. They didn’t worry about how many people died, and they were much more concerned about how much the stock market rose and its impact on Trump’s reelection.  Their focus was not on helping or uniting a nation in crisis; they divided it into Red and Blue States. They mocked the Blue States, the biggest victims of the first wave, and did a victory dance with the “Red States” that thought they were immune to the virus. Karma can be a real bitch.

So, where do we find ourselves today? We have approximately 70 percent of adults receiving at least one vaccine shot, and unfortunately, nearly 93 million Americans have chosen not to get vaccinated at all. The Delta Variant is a nefarious upgrade from the original COVID-19. It’s much more contagious, it starts attacking your respiratory systems much quicker, and it is more likely to affect younger people and infants than the original virus. We are now seeing 100,000 new cases a day, and hospitals and health professionals are overwhelmed with the people who need hospitalization. Reports show that 99 percent of the hospitalizations are for people that have not taken a vaccine. It has been established that immunized people can contract the Delta Variant but are at very low risk of becoming seriously ill, hospitalized, or die. I’ll take that deal any day.

Yet, you still have millions that resist taking the vaccine. Frankly, in the beginning, I had my reservations about taking the vaccine, and the primary reason was that Donald Trump was President at the time. Anyone that knows anything about Donald trump knows that he would sell you snake oil as a cancer treatment if he thought it benefitted him. I also was concerned about the speed with which the vaccine was developed. I had doubts were before I learned that they have been working on the mRNA technology for at least a decade and how the process was conducted. It’s not that I didn’t trust the science; what I feared was the corruption of the science. I still wanted to wait until the dust settled and we eliminated the corruption and incompetence

Notwithstanding the people who have medical reasons for not getting vaccinated, what is holding you up? Many that have chosen not to be vaccinated say it is about personal responsibility. We have the hypocritical anti-vaxxers because they have benefited from parents and grandparents who believed in science and the social good. They had their children vaccinated against debilitating diseases like Polio, Measles, and Whooping Cough, yet they deny their children the benefit of the same kinds of protection.

Then we have the people that say their constitutional freedoms are being infringed. I must tell you, I have wracked my brains and searched everywhere, but I haven’t been able to find where the constitution says “not wearing a mask” is an inalienable right. Besides, the Declaration of Independence states Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness are inalienable rights. You can’t enjoy the second two until you secure the first one. Lastly, I would like to ask these defenders of freedom, when was the last time you pulled out your AR 17 because the 7-11 clerk said you had to wear a shirt and footwear into their store? People, it’s a piece of cloth that slows down the transmission of the COVID 19 virus.

Some people say that they won’t take the vaccine for religious reasons. Fair enough. I’m not a theologian, and there were times that I would rather be somewhere else, but my mother was a godly woman, and I learned a lot from her about the core principles of faith. She taught me that all things, big and small, come from God, and I cannot believe that if God bestowed us with the knowledge and tools to save ourselves from pestilence, the Lord would want us to squander that opportunity.

Get vaccinated. Rather than pledge your allegiance to a party that has politicians like Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Greg Abbott that bellow about individual choice in the middle of a devastating pandemic, yet were first on line for the vaccine.  Human lives are just stepping stones to power for them. I guarantee you they won’t put their children at risk. Pledge your allegiance to yourself, your family, and your neighbors, get vaccinated.
